Drywall Finishes: Understanding Levels 0-5 (and Why They Matter)

DECEMBER 03, 2025
When you walk into a finished room, the smoothness of the walls is one of the first things you notice, even if you don’t realize it. Behind every clean, seamless surface is a process called drywall finishing, and the quality of that finish is measured using standard “levels,” ranging from Level 0 through Level 5.

These levels help homeowners, builders, and contractors stay on the same page about expectations, smoothness, cost, and quality. Choosing the right level of finish makes a big difference in how your walls look under paint, lighting, and everyday use. Before we get into the levels, here’s a quick overview of drywall and why it matters.
What Is Drywall?
‍Drywall is also known as gypsum board, wallboard, plasterboard, or Sheetrock. It is the most common material for interior walls and ceilings in San Antonio homes and commercial spaces. It’s made of a gypsum core sandwiched between heavy paper or fiberglass mats.
Why contractors use drywall:
The 6 Levels of Drywall Finish (0–5)
Drywall finish levels were established to create consistent standards across the construction industry. They define how smooth a surface should be before it’s considered complete.Think of it as a scale. From “no finishing at all” to “perfectly smooth and paint-ready.”
LEVEL
0
No Finish
  • Drywall is hung but seams and screws are untreated
  • Rarely used in residential spaces; common in construction zones
This level is rarely used in residential settings except during early construction stages.
LEVEL
1
Basic Joint Tape Application or Tape Only
  • Joints covered with tape; no additional coats of mud
  • Suitable for ceilings, hidden areas, or temporary spaces
Think of Level 1 as “just enough to cover seams.”
LEVEL
2
Basic Joint Tape + One Coat of Joint Compound or Once Coat Tape Application or Tape Only
  • Tape + one layer of joint compound on joints
  • Functional finish for garages, storage, or mechanical rooms
  • Imperfections may still be visible
Level 2 is functional, not pretty, but appropriate for non-living spaces.
LEVEL
3
Ready for Medium or Heavy Texture or Two Coats
  • Tape + two coats on joints + fastener coverage
  • Ready for medium/heavy textures like knockdown
  • Not recommended for flat, light-colored paint
Level 3 is not recommended for smooth or lightly painted walls, because imperfections may still show.
LEVEL
4
Standard Smooth Finish
  • Tape + at least three coats + sanding for a flat surface
  • Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, offices
  • Works well with flat or low-sheen paints
This is the most common finish level in homes and commercial spaces.

However, flat paint and harsh lighting (like sunlight or spotlights) may still reveal minor imperfections.
LEVEL
5
The Highest-Quality Finish
  • Level 4 finish + skim coat over entire surface
  • Recommended for high-end homes, feature walls, or areas with bright lighting
  • Perfect for glossy, dark, or semi-gloss paints
A Level 5 finish gives the most consistent, luxurious look. It hides seams, reduces flashing, and makes the wall look perfectly smooth—even under tough lighting.
Why Finish Levels Matter to Homeowners & Businesses
Harsh or angled lighting can highlight imperfections at lower finish levels. That’s why some rooms, like hallways or feature walls, benefit from a Level 5 finish even if the rest of the home is Level 4.
